Online Mental Health First Aid

The Standard MHFA course equips adults with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to recognise, understand and respond to a friend, family member, co-worker, or another adult, experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis. 

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Gain a basic understanding of common mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, psychosis, and suicidal thoughts or behaviours.
  • Learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of various mental health issues, including changes in behaviour, mood, thoughts, and feelings.
  • Develop skills to provide initial support and assistance to someone experiencing a mental health crisis or emotional distress, including effective communication techniques, active listening, and crisis de-escalation strategies.
  • Learn how to assess the risk of harm to oneself or others in a mental health crisis situation, including suicide risk assessment, and how to respond appropriately to mitigate these risks.
  • Gain knowledge of available mental health resources and services and learn how to encourage individuals to seek professional help and support from appropriate sources.

Course Component 1 - Self-paced eLearning component (5-7 hours to complete). eLearning must be completed before attending facilitated sessions with instructor.
Course Component 2 - Instructor-led facilitated sessions using Zoom video conferencing (2 x 2.5-hour sessions). Zoom links will only be sent after completion of eLearning.

Dr Katy Theodore (she/her) 

Dr Theodore graduated 15 years ago and has had numerous adventures working as a dentist in a variety of sectors and settings, including regional Queensland and New South Wales, rural Tasmania, remote communities in the Northern Territory as well as metropolitan and regional Victoria – and three years in the Integrated Special Needs Department at the Dental Hospital in Carlton.  KT is currently very much enjoying her non-clinical role at the Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch as Advocacy Lead.
